2009 REIT Recap (in short sentences)
REITs get pummeled early in the year. For the most part the REIT industry bounces back by year-end. We see several hospitality REITs still struggling. Regional malls take one on the chin. Likewise, some pristine REITs are launched to eat the REITs that are weak.
For most of 2009 we hear about the forthcoming commercial REIT bomb, but we are still waiting for it to explode. It may not happen.
The year closes out with a large paper company announcing that it plans to convert to a REIT. This balances out the Target REIT that never happened earlier in 2009.
It really wasn’t too much drama, but probably the most drama REITs have experienced since inception.
