Airport REITs to Take Off in the Future
While an airport REIT does not exist today, it seems plausible that such an investment option may become available in the future. Several REITs do own hotel properties at airports. Likewise, many, if not most, Airport services are outsourced to vendors that specialize in specific industries.
The June 16, 2008 issue of Forbes stated in an article titled The Oracle of Manitoba, "it's not unusual for [airports] to have margins of 60% to 70%.” However, the concept of a privatized airport here in the U.S. is obscure if not completely scary for some consumers.
As municipal governments look for more ways to stretch tax dollars, they may turn to REITs to help with the huge capital expenses of expanding and managing our airport infrastructure.
