"BEE" Strategic.... Hotels and Resorts

A few weeks ago, we added Strategic Hotels and Resorts, Inc. to the REIT Media REIT Directory, and at that time, I said that there would be more to come about this particular company. Well, here we go.  Strategic Hotels, which trades under the symbol BEE, invests in luxury hotel properties.  This REIT has a special place in my heart because my wife and I honeymooned at their Ritz-Carlton property in Half Moon Bay, CA.

Besides owning some world class properties and my personal connection, BEE has a conservative approach to potential downturns in the economy.  According to their 2007 annual report, they initiated a Phase I contingency plan as they began to predict a weak economy for 2008.  In addition, they have implemented common systems across their properties for sourcing goods at lower costs.

On top of all of this, they own great assets both domestically and internationally that take large sums of capital and time to reproduce.  Finally, they’ve executed a brilliant brand and marketing strategy around the bee. They’ve got a great logo that contains an abstract bee complimented with beautiful earth tones. To me, that’s not some superficial component of a company. A logo is a reflection of management’s attention to details and corporate imagery.

Just visit RitzCarlton.com to see how great their Half Moon Bay, CA property looks. And if you ever saw the movie American Wedding, this was the hotel used in that movie.

I have been buying as well because I love the properties. If inflation is running amok it would be hard to replace these properties. Actually, you could never replace them because of the unique locations.

If you don't buy in a bear market, you don't buy low and sell high. I have been a big buyer the last few days.
