The New REIT.com
Wow, I step away from the action and come back to find NAREIT making a more aggressive and much sharper online image with their brand new REIT.com portal. Mr. Wechsler has a decent video intro for the new site. According to the date on the Windows Media video file, they must have announced the new site around May 23rd. Of course you can only watch the video if you are running a Microsoft computer. Sorry Apple and Linux users (the rising creative class). After listening to the video, my next thought was, "how much did they pay for REIT.com?" Well I have no idea, but the previous owner of REIT.com was LQ Management LLC which is the company that manages La Quinta Inn and Suites. I know from my research that REITs.com was sold several months ago in the mid 30k's. Likewise, REITnet.com is on the market for 40k. It seems only practical that REIT.com would be valued at 100k plus. How can a membership sponsored organization justify such a capital investment?
Here at the lowly REIT Media Blog we rarely hear directly from REIT professionals (we are not in the cone of silence). However, I can’t help but think that REIT Media may have helped motivate NAREIT to revaluate their on-line strategy. True or not, I think it's possible, and a positive move for everyone as the general promotion of REITs is a good thing.
BTW, if anyone wants to write us a 5 figure check for REITMedia.com - psst send me an email.

Apple and Linux users, you were unfortunately misinformed by this Blog entry.
You can view the online NAREIT video by downloading either one of the following FREE applications:
www.flip4mac.com
(allows Mac users to play wmv files through Quicktime)
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/flip4mac.mspx
(this version of the Windows Media Player is for Mac users)
Um, Mac users can actually view the video by downloading Flip4Mac or Windows Media Player for Mac for free here:

Nothing like requiring your customers to jump through hoops to access your message. I'm assuming the two comments above are from NAREIT employees.
The "Jumping through hoops" mentality is counter productive. How do you open PDFs? You had to download the free Acrobat Reader application in the beginning. You just download it once and you can always open .wmv files forever. Laziness is not a good thing when it comes to technology. And I do not work for nareit BTW... we all know what happens when you assume...
